Kundli Matching: What the 36 Gunas Really Measure
30 July 2026 · Dr. Amit Sharma
In traditional matchmaking, two horoscopes are compared through Ashtakoot Guna Milan — eight factors (koots) that together score out of 36. A score of 18 or above is usually considered workable, but the number alone never settles the question.
The eight koots, briefly
- Varna — ego and temperament.
- Vashya — mutual influence and control.
- Tara — health and well-being.
- Yoni — intimacy and physical compatibility.
- Graha Maitri — mental and intellectual bond.
- Gana — nature and disposition.
- Bhakoot — emotional life and family.
- Nadi — health and progeny, the highest-weighted.
Why the total isn’t everything
A high score with a serious Bhakoot or Nadi dosha still needs care, and a modest score can work well when the difficult factors are absent. A good reading weighs the doshas, checks for cancellations, and looks at both charts as a whole — the number is where the conversation starts, not where it ends.
